Adavantages:
1. No contamination
The R.C. System collects sample through the recovery holes in the face of the drill bit immediately as the cuttings or sample is formed.The drilled sample does not have to travel the length of the hammer where contamination and loss of sample takes place.
2. Higher Production
In broken and fractured ground conditions, the R.C. will often out perform the conventional hammer in terms of penetration rates.
3. Dry Sample
Even in certain water bearing stratas it is still possible to collect a dry sample because the cuttings(sample) are collected as they formed through the face of the drill bit.
4. Higher Sample Recovery
Because the sample is collected through the face of the drill bit there is no loss of sample when drilling through broken or fractured ground. And since the bit matched to the chuck size,there is very little bypass of sample and recovery rates of up to 98% are generally achievable.
Product Introduce:
Much like air core drilling, RC drilling returns cutting to the surface through an inner tube inside the rod. This is achieved by blowing air down the rods at a rate up to 1500 Pascals. This creates a pressure differential that pushes cuttings and water up via air lift.
The drilling component is powered by a pneumatic reciprocating piston (also known as the hammer), which drives a steel drill bit.
The two most commonly used drilling bits in RC systems are the fixed cutter and roller cone, both of which are advantageous depending on the project and geographical location of the site.
RC drilling is primarily used on large machinery and drill rigs and often goes to depths of 500 meters.
High quality RC equipment also has the ability to dry out the rock with large air compressors before the drill hits, which provides dry rock chips and, in turn, better samples.
Basics of Reverse Circulation Drilling:
(1) RC drilling uses rods with inner and outer tubes, the drill cuttings are returned to surface inside the rods. The drilling mechanism is a pneumatic reciprocating piston known as a hammer driving a tungsten-steel drill bit.
(2) RC drilling utilizes much larger rigs and machinery and depths of up to 500 meters are routinely achieved. RC drilling ideally produces dry rock chips, as large air compressors dry the rock out ahead of the advancing drill bit.
(3) RC drilling is slower and costlier but achieves better penetration than RAB or air core drilling; it is cheaper than diamond coring and is thus preferred for most mineral exploration work.
(4) Reverse circulation is achieved by blowing air down the annulus of the rod, the differential pressure creating air lift of the water and cuttings up the inner tube which is inside each rod. It reaches the deflector box at the top of the drill string then moves through a sample hose which is attached to the top of the cyclone.
The drill cuttings travel around the inside of the cyclone until they fall through an opening at the bottom and are collected in a sample bag. For any drill hole there will be a large number of sample bags, each one marked to record the location and drilling depth that the sample was obtained.
The collected series of sample bag cuttings are later taken for analysis to determine the mineral composition of the drill hole. The analysis results of each individual bag represents the mineral composition at a particular sample point in the drill hole. Geologists can then survey the drilled ground analysis and make decisions about the value of the overall mineral deposit.
